Wall Mirror Round Up

Mirrors are a great way to reflect the beauty of a space. Mirrors can make a space appear larger, they can make a room feel brighter and they can reflect the outdoors bringing them in. They can be purely functional or they can be sculptural and serve as a work of art. After finishing the design of a clients guest bedroom we have yet to find the perfect wall mirror for the room. After doing some research I thought I would share some of my favorites:

Dream Home in Maui

I hope you had a great weekend, It has been cold and sunny all weekend and I love it! This is my favorite kind of winter weather, by far.

This year for Christmas my sister gave me the book Tom Kundig: Houses 2 and I am so happy to have a new addition to my library for design and architectural inspiration. I found the architecture of this Dream Home in Maui particularly inspiring and wanted to share it with you today:

Located on top of a craggy Maui cliff...

It takes a lot of thought and planning to create a design that blends into the landscape and I think the architects achieved that with this home.

The architecture is so simple, perfect for Maui.

The floor plan has three distinct zones: a guest quarter at the left,

the main living area in the center and a master suite on the right all separated by enclosed walkways.

Each of the living spaces open out onto the back lawn and pool with amazing views of the ocean!

Lots of outdoor living space is perfect for the tropics...

The two walls on the main living area open up completely connecting the outside to the living area.

A view out to the ocean...what a perfect place to entertain a large amount of people!

The kitchen island extends out from the kitchen and also serves as an outdoor table.

(Looks almost like a diving board from this angle!)

The interiors look simple and easy to maintain perfect design for a vacation home...
...and you know how I love those sliding doors!

A New Look

Today I wanted to share an easy DIY project I completed over the Holidays for one of my clients, I am re-doing the bedroom of a 7 year-old girl and I am so excited to give her a her very own big girl room , that will include: a new bed, a desk, tons of storage and plenty of room to display her artwork. Working with a small budget I decided to get creative and complete some cool projects for the space. I took the paint swatch down to the fabric shop and found a sweet floral print fabric to recover a basic cream colored chair the family had. Here are photographs and instructions on how to re-cover a chair.

What you need for the project:

• Chair
• Fabric
• Staple Gun
• New Foam Padding (if needed)
  
  Chair Before:

The existing fabric and cushion are in great condition, however 

I thought a new fabric would be fun for my clients new bedroom!

1. Locate the screws that are holding the pad on the base of the chair.
This one had 4 total screws that easily removed and the seat quickly popped off!

2. This is the step when you would remove existing fabric from the chair and replace the cushion.
The existing cream fabric has a moisture barrier so I decided to leave it to protect the chair pad.

3. Place the seat on the fabric and cut fabric around the seat of the chair leaving enough fabric on all sides to wrap up each side and adhere to the bottom of the seat cushion. Make sure to think about how you want the fabric pattern to appear on the chair. I wanted to center a large flower aligned at the front center of the seat as you can see below.

4. Tightly wrap the fabric up the front side of the seat so that it is even and just where you want it. Then use a staple gun to adhere fabric to the back of the chair seat. Start stapling at the center and work outward, pulling fabric tightly. I put a staple about every 3 inches or so but you can do more if you want. Next, work on the opposite side, continue to pull the fabric tight.

5. Neatly pleat the corners and staple them down to the backing of the
chair seat so the entire seat is tightly covered and looks tailored.
Here is the new seat...

The fabric has these sweet little lilac colored hearts that coordinate perfectly with the wall color!

And here is the new chair!

New Year & A Dream Hotel

Happy Monday, I am so excited to share this dream hotel with you today! I have always been fascinated with the culture, traditions and unique design that can be found in Bali. A good friend of mine told me about the Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali last winter and I am dreaming of visiting!

Located on a cliff overlooking Bali's southern coastline on the island's Bukit Peninsula, the views of the Indian ocean are endless! Not only is this design exquisite it has won many awards for being eco-conscious. Using Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) principles, including local materials, water conservation, rain gardens, water recycling with grey water systems, heat pumps for water heating, salt water pools and so much more.

A view from the ocean...

 

Horizontal lines are used throughout the design of the Alila Villas, leading your eyes to the stunning views of the Indian ocean in the distance.

The villas have a great sense of privacy while maintaining an open and airy feel.
I love when indoor spaces are linked to each other by outdoor courtyards.

 The indoor spaces were designed using local and regional materials to reduce the environmental impact and support the local economy.

 What a relaxing 180 degree view of the ocean!

A traditional Indonesian restaurant boasts thick slabs of reclaimed wood that serves as a
dining table for guests.

 Throughout the property there are shade huts that give guests a place to escape and relax away from the sun. The repetition of the random horizontal wood slats gives plenty of shade while casting amazing shadows. What a wonderful place to spend an afternoon!
I love the assorted patterns and textural fabrics used in the seating are below.

The landscaping is tropical and lush, using local plants from the Bali ecosystem,
encouraging local bird and animal life

As relaxing as the Holidays were, I wouldn't mind a vacation to Bali. I love traveling to get inspired about design projects. I hope you enjoy this bit of inspiration and have a wonderful Monday! Happy New Year 2012

Happy New Year...I can't believe it is 2012. I have been thinking a lot about my wishes for the new year and I am excited to have the best year yet!

Here is a photo of some of the things that were on my table this Holiday season. 

I decorated with red, white and silver this year and loved how it turned out.

The antique coasters are black and white photos of my grandmother and are so special to me.

This year I planted paper whites in small white pots I bought at Ikea as a centerpiece for my table. 

I love how they turned out and my whole house smells delicious!

If you plant bulbs over a period of a couple weeks they will be delayed, 

giving you continuous blooms all winter long.

I love paper whites, they are such delicate flowers. They are so easy to grow too. 

I planted some in glass vases with water and it has been so much fun to watch them grow.

I also planted an amaryllis bulb and displayed it in a glass canister from Pottery Barn. 

What a beautiful New Years surprise to see it blooming today!

I think the best things in life are the little moments that you create to make your home more beautiful and more comfortable. This year I hope to stop and enjoy the precious moments with friends and family!

The Holidays

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas! I spent the weekend with family and it was wonderful. We made homemade pasta which may just be a new tradition for us! I am taking this week off from work and I am thinking alot about my New Years resolutions for 2012!
