House Tour: Lake Martin

Please excuse my absence for the past week. Today I was so excited to share this home with you. Designed by Tracery Interiors on Lake Martin, Alabama. This is the second home on Lake Martin that I have shown on my blog and I am thinking I might need to go for a visit! It really must be stunning there!

The family that lives in this grand home, situated on a prominent point at Lake Martin, wanted a lake house where they could relax away from their busy lives in Birmingham and gather their friends and family. Inside the home, reclaimed timbers frame a central living space with dramatic windows overlooking the lake. French antiques are paired with raw wood and galvanized metal to create an aesthetic that’s light, airy and unexpected. The use of a similar color palette from room to room creates continuity throughout the large home.

Modern touches of linen and galvanized metal soften stately French antiques, while dividing the living room into intimate seating areas makes it feel at once cozy and grand. Moored by striking architectural details like the substantial fireplace and natural stone pillars, the space also has playful touches, like graceful chandeliers in unexpected places, keeping it light and unconventional.

I love the architectural details of this home, the structural stone columns and wood beams juxtapose with the soft linens, neutral palette and the antique chandeliers.

The casual vibe continues into the kitchen, where small appliances and plenty of extra storage are tucked away in a back pantry. What a brilliant idea to use a sliding ladder to access the top cupboards and the black and white color palette gives a modern touch to the rustic charm of this home.

Offset by the natural wood and white color palette, these possibilities include modern details, like two marble-topped islands anchoring the room, a large farmhouse sink and open shelving

Home Tour: Alice Lane Private Residence

I found this home last year while searching for design inspiration and am so happy to share it with you today. Designed by Alice Lane as a private residence in Provo, Utah. The exterior resembles a palace and the interior is nothing short of royal. This residence has "14,000 elegantly detailed square feet". The pale aqua trim contrasts with the neutral stone siding and sets the stage for the interior color scheme. The round dormer windows are picturesque, I can only imagine the view from inside!

This is such a gorgeous entry, I love the rounded ceiling and that amazing door.

The sweeping staircase is made of finely-crafted patina rails. The wood floors in the dining area were set in a chevron pattern which is an unexpected and unique detail.

Rather than painting the walls a dark color and the trim white they left the walls white and stained wood for the moulding and details. I think this is a great way to showcase the beautiful wood grain.

The wood ceiling and large beams mix beautifully with the casual linen furniture and the fireplace is perfect scale and aesthetic for the space, I love it!

A large kitchen island can add work space in the kitchen as well as a casual place to dine.

The kitchen has an over sized apron front farm sink. I Love the tile back splash that goes up the walls to the tops of the cabinets.
Open shelves are a great way to display pretty dishware. The designers coordinated the colors of the tile with the colors of the dishware, these are the details that make up a gorgeous design.

A mixture of gilded golds, patina metals and dark bronze make up a ensemble of
natural metals in the space and contrast well with the soft linens and pale blue tones.

The details are extraordinary!

Dream Home

Interior designer Barry Dixon designed the interior of this magnificent St. Barts beach cottage. I found this teal blue door on pinterest and was so excited to find the rest of the home tour in Coastal Living magazine!

As you enter you can see directly through to the infinity pool on the back terrace. Coastal Living describes this house as: "The design is a quintessential French island cottage, complete with a steeply pitched roof line, plank siding, louvered windows, and bold turquoise shutters."

Interior Designer Barry took into account the tropical weather when designing this home. He used louvered windows to keep the cool breeze flowing through the interior.

Industrial lantern and the rough texture of the jute rug create contrast against the soft fabrics and cushy furniture. The color palette throughout the home was taken from the views of the ocean. This is a good way to inspire a room in any home, look out your windows and draw inspiration from what you find.

Gorgeous open staircase and subtle island furnishings give an open and airy feel.

The 3rd floor mezzanine is a play area for the homeowners grandchildren.
What a wonderful view of the bay and such a cute port-hole window!

Elemental iron chairs pair with a textured oak table; the pendant lamp, which interior designer Barry purchased in Morocco, adds a touch of the arabesque.

Wrapped in gauzy curtains and surrounded by shades of aqua and sea foam, the bed faces pocket doors that open to the pool terrace and a private sitting nook, which Barry outfitted with a pair of unfinished teak love seats. Stone side tables and woven floor cushions add texture to the space.

A banquette wraps halfway around the outdoor space. Exposed wood and heavy curtains make the space feel cool and inviting. I think drapery on a porch is not used often enough and can have an amazing impact and can make a porch function as an outdoor room.
There are such amazing outdoor fabrics these days!

"For a streamlined look that doesn’t distract from the jaw-dropping view of the Bay of St. Jean, Barry chose simple, low-slung furnishings. Teak chaises with a distressed finish and striped cushions encourage lounging." -Coastal Living

Dream Home: Lake House Cabin in Rural Alabama

Today I wanted to share with you the exquisite design of an Alabama Lake House Cabin. Designed by Susan Ferrier of McAlpine Booth & Ferrier Interiors as a primary residence for a family of three.

The cabin exterior was designed by architect Bobby McAlpine and he describes the aesthetic as "Alabama rural camp vernacular". The dark rough cut pine plank siding makes this four story home blend into the landscape in just the perfect way, the dark exterior contrasts beautifully with the cool, light colors of the soft interior decor. The views out those huge windows must be extraordinary!

Light and dark wood make a beautiful pairing on a staircase that links the main floor of a four-story Alabama lake house to the bedrooms. Designer Susan Ferrier used the same finishes throughout the house. Walls are whitewashed, rough-cut pine planks. Steps are in a dark Jacobean stain.

The dining room's pie-wedge table sits atop a Custom Wave silk and wool rug. The grid of tree prints gives balance to the wall of windows on the opposing wall.

An off kilter solid wood chandelier suspends just over the round dining table.

The painted wood panel cabinets blend well with this cottage aesthetic.
Appliances are hidden behind painted paneled doors blending them into the woodwork.
Extra long upholstered bar stool benches are so wonderful in this cabin style home, what great design!

Back to back sofas and heavy drapes separate the living room from the dining room creating flexibility to unite the spaces of divide them for more intimate entertaining.

The drapes span all of the way up to the wood paneled ceiling. This not only provides privacy form the outside elements it draws eyes up to the ceiling making the space feel even more expansive.

Lower floor sitting area; the angles are non-rectilinear creating intrigue amongst the primarily neutral color palette in the space. The floor lamps have a tripod metal base and the windows are shaped as pentagons which contrasts against the linear wood panels on the walls and ceiling.

Dining alcove; the live edge wood slab table is contrasts well with the cream
colored walls and linen slip-covered chairs. What a great design for a door.

Master suite, Beautiful free standing Kohler tub and his and hers vanities opposite each other in the space. I think the use of the textural wood on floor, ceiling and walls is outstanding.
What a wonderful use of drapery in the space.

Master suite; The drapes surrounding the bed create a focal point in the room.
While the color palette is neutral the materials in the space are highly textural: luxurious velvets, rough linens, cozy wool and silk rugs and rich wood grains. All of these elements layer upon each other and create balanced design.
